Voice message or SMS: when does calling work better?

With a voice message a number is called and your text is read aloud. For most uses SMS is better, but there are exceptions where calling wins.

When calling wins

On a landline, because no SMS arrives there. With an audience that does not read easily or does not always look at a screen. And when something genuinely has to happen now: a ringing phone is harder to ignore than a vibration.

The classic use

Monitoring outside office hours. An outage at three in the morning has to wake somebody, and a call does that better than a message.

What to keep short

A spoken message is not re-read. Say the most important thing first, repeat it at the end, and stay under twenty seconds.

Combine

The strongest setup is usually both: an SMS with the details people can read back, and a call if nothing happens within a few minutes.
