What is an SMS gateway?

An SMS gateway is a service that connects software applications to the mobile networks, so you can send and receive SMS messages programmatically — via an API or a web interface, without having to manage telecom infrastructure yourself.

Companies use an SMS gateway to send messages reliably and at scale: verification codes (OTP), notifications, appointment reminders, delivery updates, marketing campaigns and server alerts. SMSBOX is the Belgian SMS gateway by JAAN bv, with direct operator connections and delivery to more than 200 countries.

How does an SMS gateway work?

Your application sends a message to the gateway (via the REST API, Mail2SMS or the web interface). The gateway converts it to the right network protocol and delivers it to the recipient via a mobile operator. Delivery reports flow back, so you can track the status of every message. In short:

  1. Connect — Your software connects to the gateway using an API key.
  2. Send — You pass the recipient(s) and the message text.
  3. Deliver — The gateway routes the message via the operator to the device.
  4. Track — You receive delivery statuses and any replies back.
